Quotable Quote

I found this quote in the margin of Code Complete 2, attributed to Pablo Picasso.
When art critics get together they talk about Form and Meaning. When artists get together they talk about where you can buy cheap turpentine.

Out with the old, in with the .... ?

I sent my motherboard away to get the chip fan replaced under warranty. Some time later it turned out that it had been replaced, and returned, but to the wrong address, then it finally arrived, but didn't work because they hadn't tested it, so I sent it away, and it got lost again for a bit. I had a call from the tech today after chasing for an update and it turns out that my whole machine is pretty much poked.

The motherboard won't pick up any RAM at all, the RAM won't work in another machine, the PSU was mostly dead, the video card (an expensive high end one) apparently is dead. Don't know about the CPU but replacement for the mobo is going to be impossible as they don't make them any more, and the CPU/RAM were quite specific to it. Bugger it.

So, the mobo, CPU and RAM are under warranty so a credit will probably be issued instead of replacement, then I'll have to work out what I want instead. Kind of yay that I get to pick something new, and a little more future proof than last time, but suck that I have to buy effectively a whole new kit. Fortunately no data was harmed as the drives are safe and sound in my secret lab.

Scootin'

So I got a scooter the other day. It's fun, real fun! Oh, and practical, and cost saving, yes, that's right :) Not to mention it's fun :)

I realised that in town I didn't know what the parking rules were for scooters so I popped into the DCC customer service centre to find out.

It turns out that:

Dunedin City Council provides Motorcycle parking spaces at various locations within the city. However Motorcycle parking in other parking spaces is as follows:
  • To park on an ordinary Metered space, the parking time must be paid for the same as any other vehicle
  • To park on a Pay and Display space, parking time does not have to be paid for (as there is nowhere to display a receipt) however time limits must be observed as per normal
  • To park on a Time Restricted space such as a P60, time limits must be observed as per normal
(info correct as at 6th March 2008 - this info will apparently be available on the DCC website in the near future)

And here is a list of motorcycle parks around town where you can park your sweet wee machine all freakin' day!
  • Bond St: Corner of Water St
  • Crawford St: Outside McIver & Veitch
  • Crawford St: Outside Motorcycle Replacements
  • Cumberland St: Outside Hospital
  • Filleul St: Outside Smiths City
  • Forth St: Opposite Block F
  • George St: Between Hanover St & Frederick St
  • George St (East Side): Between Hanover St & Frederick St
  • Great King St: Outside Dental Skill
  • Great King St: Outside Hospital
  • Harbour Terrace: Opposite McMillan Centre
  • High St: Outside Arc Cafe
  • Moray Pl: Outside ANZ
  • Moray Pl: Outside Harveys Real Estate
  • Moray Pl: Outside Number 1

Get a scooter and we can ride together in sweet cheap harmony!
