Bug Arrives!

First thing this morning at 12:45, Linda's waters broke. She called the hospital and they advised that unless she was having contractions she should try to get some sleep. We managed to get a few hours, and then had an appointment with the midwife at 10am today. By that stage, contractions were happening, but only one every 10 minutes, and they weren't too strong.

We then left the hospital, went to the supermarket and went to pick up the carseat from Plunket, then went back home. I went back to work to wait for Linda to call. She called an hour later, and an hour after that we were heading to the hospital, and then JUST TWELVE MINUTES AFTER THAT, our son was born!

Please put your hands together and welcome Linus Robert Brown Patterson (5lb 12oz) into this world (with all it's bad bits). Mum & Bubs are fine, Dad is shocked - especially after anticipating a decent length for a labour!

Pictures coming soon...

Windows XP Home Permissions

Arrgh, it's sooo frustrating when file permissions get all farked up with Windows XP. Why? Because all the drooly settings that you can play with in Windows XP Pro are missing.

But, there is a Microsoft tool that will install the long sought after "Security" tab on a file or folders properties dialog.

Read about it here: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_home_sectab.htm. Thanks Doug!

Transport Tycoon and Linux

I mentioned a while back that I had shifted to using Linux ... well, that was a little white lie as I'd run into some hardware related problems and as a result ended up spending time in Windows googling for help and got sucked into that easier-to-do-nothing default.

But, I'm pleased to announce that I'm now running Linux full time! I haven't booted back to Windows yet, and other than to play some games I can't see myself wanting to do that.

Anyway, the main reason I'm blogging right now is that I've found that there's an opensource version of Transport Tycoon, and it runs on both Windows and Linux. After installing it (see here for HOWTO with Debian based distro's) I found that the multiplayer option was on the main menu. Excitedly I grabbed Linda and get her to install the Windows version and we mutliplayered into the night.

I'm really chuffed with Linux and my laptop - it's Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger) by the way, and ALL of my hardware was supported out of the box. My multiple hats are off all at once (revealing my luscious locks) to the Ubuntu team!
