OpenTTD Scenario: New Zealand
I’ve been a fan of Transport Tycoon ever since I was introduced to it by Glutnix back in 1998 or so, and it seems that many people still are - so much so that an open source version has been developed so you can play it (complete with bugfixes and lots of new features) on your Windows or Linux PC (multiplayer even). You do need the graphics files from the original game however.
A while back I remember naming the towns on a random map the same as some NZ towns. This was really neat because when it said that a subsidy was offered for passengers from Dunedin to Christchurch, I instantly knew where to go, rather than scrolling around to find the default (and amusing) town names (such as Little Prudford, Great Chundington etc)
This time I’ve gone the whole hog and created a New Zealand scenario. You can edit it to suit your own needs or play it as is. My only regret with this scenario is that it should be 4 times bigger which would allow more room for industries and towns and transportation networks. Let’s hope there’s a rainy day coming soon!
Anyway, here’s the relevant files:
- A medium sized preview (142kb)
- A full sized preview (966kb)
- The scenario file itself (place in your scenarios directory in OpenTTD)

There’s a HUUUGE one coming, 2048×2048. I’m placing towns on it at the moment. To give you an idea, it has Invercargill, Gore, Balclutha, Milton and Dunedin on it and they’re a fair way apart
…but in the meantime, I get “The requested page (blog/2006/12/images/ttdx/New Zealand.scn) was not found on this server.”
The link should be OK now - if not it’s http://www.guru.net.nz/blog/images/ttdx/New%20Zealand.scn
Hey, I been wanting to do the same thing. Have you got a copy of the 2048×2048 version I can have even if its land only? Cant wait for this one when its finished.
regards.
Reuben
Tauranga,
Yep, it’s here somewhere - I’ll dig it out and put it on here. It’s ridiculously easy to make money in because it’s so large all you need is an aircraft to fly from Invercargill to Auckland and it makes a mint
I guess you could make the economy really hard to compensate….
This is awesome mate. However it’s kinda small. It makes me sad to lower all the land on the east coast near Kaikora just to put 2 tracks through, it will look not authentic enough, Then it will just be sad lol! I wanna put dodgy wellington airport in there too!
Ive been addicted to Transport Tycoon since 1996, maybe I should have a crack at making maps eh lol
Hi, Have you found that huge .scn file yet?
Regards
Reuben.
Found it! Here it is: Big NewZealand.scn
Thanks
Is the real big map finished already?? I’ve travelled around two months throughout New Zealand. So i cant wait!!
It’s finished in so far as the map and all the towns are done, but there’s hardly any industries. I’ve put some coal mines down the west coast, and a few forests here and there, but without researching the country I’m not too sure of what industry should go where.
Of course there’s nothing stopping you from using the scenario editor in Transport Tycoon to place them yourself, then you can send the map back to us all via this blog post
Well you can send it to me and i can look what i can do… my email is:

It’s available in the comment above, and also via this link.
What did you use to edit this scenario. I have played it right through to sept 1999 and no electrice rails due in the mid 60’s and no monorail? I only have steam and diesels. How can i change this?
Great map though. (BigNZ)
Hey Reuben, I used the scenario editor in OpenTTD. I’ve just finished running an accelerated game on the BigNewZealand scenario and the monorails kicked in some time in the year 2000. I’m not sure if there’s a way to configure these dates or not.
Ok, i only ran it through to sept 99. not quite long enough. thanks. I believe the climate has to do with what is available and when.
OMG, Big NZ is huge.
Hey this is great
I’m stealing it ^__^;;
