Ubuntu and Catan
This time last year I tried installing Ubuntu onto my laptop – it was a bit of a failure. The live CD worked in native widescreen resolution but the HDD install didn’t. The touch pad didn’t work, sound didn’t work, wifi didn’t work. It wasn’t too flash.
With every release of Ubuntu since then (three I think) things have got better and better. I’ve just installed Ubuntu LTS 6.06 (Long Term Support) and it looks like everything works out of the box! Touchpad, Wifi, Sound, USB and even system hibernation! Colour me impressed and very pleased
In a completely unrelated way I finally worked up the courage to have another birthday just recently and my efforts were rewarded with many bits and pieces, but I’d have to say the best gift was from my lovely wife Linda. She got me Settlers of Catan. Yippee, although when we played together (2 player is actually playable, contrary to the suggestion of the game) we felt like we were cheating on poor Tim who had always been there for us with his well expanded collection of Catan. We’ll be sure to cut him in on the action again, mainly because he can pick up Indian takeaways for us on his way to our place, yum yum!
Oh, and a very close second was from Linda’s mum – some good old fashioned home baking – her cheese straws are to die for, mmmm!

Well I have to agree. I installed 6.06LTS as well not long ago. Ditto here. I think the only thing that didn’t work is the WiFi card driver is not quite as up to date as I would like. I think it is a Atheros. Anyway it works but doesn’t have WPA support so whilst Windows can support my wireless router my Linux installation does not.
Having said that Ubuntu is a really sweet OS. I even heard Cory Doctorow install it whilst chatting in a recent episode of TWiT. His experience seemed much the same.
